Don't knock the simple, these look great!! (Simple is also my preferred style of choice, if you've seen the ones I've done).

First, I LOVE your layout. ;-)

Second, simple is so much better. :D So many people overdo their icons with textures and brushes and while I don't mind them in moderation, there's times I want the icon just for the pretty picture in it, you know?
